Create an item from a BOM

Prev Next

Once a production BOM is entered, it must be linked to an inventory item. You can create an item directly from a production BOM. Doing so instructs the program to automatically populate data on the item card with corresponding data from the linked production BOM.

The following steps describe how to create an item from a package BOM. The same procedure applies to formulas. For simplicity, only a package BOM is described in detail.

Note

Inventory items can only be created from formulas and package BOMs. Item processes and co-product/by-product processes require that output items be assigned to the BOM before they can be certified.

Steps

  1. In the search box, enter Package BOMs, and then choose the related link.

  2. Open the relevant package BOM card. On the Versions FastTab, select the package BOM version from which you will create an item and choose Edit Version. The Package BOM Version page appears.

  3. On the Actions tab, in the Functions group, choose Create Item. The Create Item From BOM page appears.

The fields on this page let you enter additional item settings not included on the production BOM.

  4. Fill in the fields.

  5. Select the Display Item Card field if you want the program to display the new item immediately after it is created.

  6. Choose OK.

The program creates a new item. Information on the item card is copied from the production BOM. If data was entered on the Create Item From BOM page, this is also copied to the new item card.

Note

While much of the information on the item card is populated automatically when it is created from a production BOM, some item characteristics are not covered by this process. If this information needs to be recorded for an item, enter it manually.

For information about the limitations of creating an item from a BOM, see Create item from BOM limitations.
