When you use the Create Item From BOM page to create an inventory item that corresponds to an existing BOM, most of the key information is filled in on the newly generated item card, either copied from the BOM itself or from information you enter in the Create Item From BOM page.
There are, however, some limitations to the Create Item from BOM feature. The following item characteristics must still be set up manually.
Additional units of measure
When an item is created using the Create Item from BOM feature, the program automatically fills in the Base Unit of Measure field on the item card. If you want to assign additional units of measure to an item, enter them manually in the Item Unit of Measure table, which you open by choosing Related Information, pointing to Item, and then choosing Units of Measure.
Unit price
When the Create Item from BOM feature is used, it automatically enters the cost of the created item in the appropriate fields on the item card. The system determines the item's cost from the cost of each BOM component. Item price, however, is the dollar amount for which the item sells per unit. Because a user determines an item's unit price, the Create Item from BOM feature cannot automatically fill in this information. Enter a value in the Unit Price field on the Invoicing FastTab of the item card manually.
Auto Plan if Component
You can instruct the system to automatically create a production order for an item if it is the component of another process scheduled for production. For example, if 20 units of Item A are used in the production of Item B, a production order for Item B automatically generates an additional order for 20 units of Item A. The Create Item from BOM feature does not automatically designate an item as automatically planned if it is the component of another item. Select the Auto Plan if Component field on the Replenishment FastTab of the item card manually.
Planning information
Fields on the Planning FastTab of the item card are not filled in by the Create Item from BOM feature. If planning information exists for the item, enter it manually.
Item tracking information
Fields on the Item Tracking FastTab of the item card are not filled in by the Create Item from BOM feature. If item tracking information exists for the item, enter it manually.
Dimensions
Dimensions are not assigned to an item created by the Create Item from BOM feature. If dimensions exist for the item, assign them manually.
Additional granules
Several additional granules are available for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. The Create Item from BOM feature was designed for use within the core system. Anywhere Mobility Solutions settings for items that involve an optional granule are not entered when an item is generated using the Create Item from BOM feature. If an optional granule requires additional information assigned to items, enter this information manually for the item.
