Multi-level BOM explosion

Prev Next

Life Sciences Supply Chain Management improves Microsoft’s standard Explode BOM feature to allow users to explode item requirements for multi-level formula items typically involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The explosion process results in a list of item requirement lines for all the raw materials involved in product manufacturing.

The Multi-level BOM explosion button is available in the item requirement form (Project management and accounting > Project > All projects > Plan > Item requirements) and allows users to perform the explosion process. The Group by item functionality allows grouping multiple item requirements lines into a single one if related to the same item number and storage dimensions (Site, Warehouse, etc.).

The system considers the formula to be exploded for the original item requirement lines as follows:

  1. The formula specified in the Sub-BOM field (Other tab > Sub-BOM), if any.

  2. The active formula of the manufactured item, considering the item requirement line site and dates.

For sub-level manufactured products, the active formula is exploded.

In case of a missing active formula, it is possible to define the validation method the system must apply during the multi-level explosion process by setting the Multi-level BOM explosion check method field in the item card (Product information management > Products > Released products). Possible values are:

  • No check: the line without an active formula is not exploded. No messages are displayed to the user.

  • Warning only: the line without an active formula is not exploded. A warning message is displayed to users to inform them which item has a missing active formula.

  • Not allowed: the explosion process is not executed if a line does not have an active formula. An error message is displayed to users to inform them which item has a missing active formula.
