Material reservation

Prev Next

When processing a batch/production order, the reservation step physically blocks the material to be used. The reservation can be executed manually (for each BOM/Formula line) or automatically (that is, at a specific batch order Status for all BOM/Formula lines). In the automatic reservation, the system automatically reserves material based on the reservation strategy defined in the Item model group of the item (for example, FEFO, First Expired First Out).

Standard Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management allows users to automatically update raw material reservations by clicking the Reserve lot button in the Reservation form for each BOM/Formula line.

Life Sciences Supply Chain Management extends the standard functionalities to allow users to automatically update reservations for multiple BOM/Formula lines at the same time by adding the Reserve lot button in the BOM and Formula forms (Production control > Production orders > All production orders). Users can select one or multiple BOM/Formula lines and, by clicking the Reserve lot button, the system automatically updates raw material reservations based on the reservation strategy. An Infolog is displayed to notify reservation updates. When materials are only partially reserved, an Infolog specifies the component for which the reservation is incomplete. If users try to click the Reserve lot button for an active ingredient, the system returns an error message.

Additionally, Life Sciences Supply Chain Management provides the possibility to choose whether materials can be reserved if they expire after the start (as per Standard Microsoft behavior) or the end date of operations. If the Reservation logic by operation dates parameter is enabled (Production control > Setup > Production control parameters), users can define an operation for expiration date check, different from the consumption operation, and if the check is executed against the scheduled start date or the scheduled end date of the relevant operation.

In the Operation number for reservation field of the Route form (Product information management > Products > Released products > Engineer tab > Route > General tab), users can define the operation number of which the start/end date is checked against the materials expiration date to determine what can be reserved. If the Operation number for reservation is not specified, the system considers the Oper. No. itself.

Users have the possibility to decide, for each item, if the expiration date check for reservation is applied against the start or the end date of the operation in the Start/End operation date field in the Released products form (Product information management > Products > Released products). The value of the Start/End operation date field is copied from the items to the formula and BOM lines (Product information management > Bills of materials and formulas > Formulas/Bill of materials), and it can be overridden.

The values of the Start/End operation date and Operation number for reservation fields are then copied in batch/production orders, and they are editable for the specific order.

The system checks for each formula/BOM line the operation associated and the relevant operation for reservation, if any, and the value of Start/End operation date field. If Start/End operation date is set to Start, only batches and sub-batches having expiration date beyond the start date of the relevant operation are displayed and therefore can be reserved. If Start/End operation date is set to End, only batches and sub-batches having expiration date beyond the end date of the relevant operation are displayed and therefore can be reserved. The logic also applies to automatic reservations.

If the Reservation logic by operation dates parameter is disabled, the system follows the standard behavior (that is, the expiration date is checked against the start date of the operation defined in the BOM/Formula line).

Moreover, Life Sciences Supply Chain Management allows users to automatically remove raw material reservations upon batch order status reset by enabling the Remove reservation parameter in the Reset status form (Production control > Production orders > All production orders > Reset status > General Tab). If the Remove reservation parameter is enabled, the system automatically removes the reservation for all the BOM/Formula lines, and the quantity is set to On order in the Inventory transactions (Production control > Production orders > All production orders > Formula > Inventory > Transactions).

Note

Reservation is removed only for the selected batch/production order, even if the References parameter in the Reset status form is enabled.

Life Sciences Supply Chain Management provides the possibility to check the status of batch/production order reservation from the formula and the BOM lines by using different colors, without having to enter each individual formula or BOM line.

If the Lines colored based on reservation status parameter (Inventory management > Setup > Inventory and warehouse management parameters) is enabled, users can define the colors of the lines with inventory status Reserved physical and Reserved ordered in the Fully reserved physical and Fully reserved ordered fields (Inventory management > Setup > Inventory and warehouse management parameters) respectively.

Batch order formula lines and production order BOM lines are colored based on their inventory status. If formula/BOM lines are only partially reserved physical or partially reserved ordered, lines are not colored. If a formula/BOM line is partially reserved physical and partially reserved ordered (that is, no quantity On order), the line is colored as a fully reserved ordered. The line is kept colored as Fully reserved physical once the relevant raw material picking work has been executed, the material has been consumed via production consumption mobile device menu item, and the picking list journal has been posted (that is, Issue = Picked and Issue = Deducted).
