Controlled substances

Prev Next

A controlled substance is defined as any drug or other substance listed in Schedules I, II, III, IV, or V of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).

The Controlled Substance Act and its implementing regulations establish a framework through which the US federal government regulates the use of controlled substances for legitimate medical, scientific research, and industrial purposes, and prevents these substances from being diverted for illegal purposes. The CSA assigns various plants, drugs, and chemicals (such as narcotics, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, and anabolic steroids) to one of the five schedules based on the substance’s medical use, the potential for abuse, and safety or dependence liability.

Life Sciences Supply Chain Management allows to define the list of controlled substances schedules (Inventory management > Setup > product compliance > Controlled substance schedules) and link them to the relevant products.

Users can enable the Controlled substance parameter in the Released products form (Product information management > Products > Released product) to mark an item as a controlled substance. For items marked as controlled substances, it is possible to specify the controlled substance schedule (Controlled substance schedule field in the Manage inventory FastTab), choosing from the list of configured values.
