Pharmaceutical companies manage a wide range of new products daily, and it is fundamental to identify each item to ensure full traceability.
Life Sciences Supply Chain Management provides extensive capabilities to configure the product number format according to the company’s internal procedures. The parameters for the product number generation can be configured in the Product number groups form (Inventory management > Setup > Dimensions > Product number groups), which allows users to:
Define a specific structure for product and item numbers.
Define and include a specific number sequence in the product number.
Include Material type and Date of creation in the product number.
Specify the Date Format (for example, YYYYMMDD, YYMM, YYWK) in case the Date is included in the product number.
Configure the automatic reset of the product number sequence based on a predefined frequency (that is, never, daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly) by selecting the desired value in the Reset number sequence field.
Select the Separator to be used between the numbers composing the batch number.
To generate a product number for a new product, released product, or engineering product, click Create product number in the New product or New Released product dialog. In the Create product number form, select the Product number group. If this group requires a Material type, specify it before generating the number.
The Product number field shows a preview of the generated product number. Click Ok to confirm and complete the generation.

The Create product number button is only available if the following number sequences have the Manual parameter enabled:
Product number (Product information management > Setup > Product information management parameters > Shared number sequences).
Item number (Inventory management > Setup > Inventory and warehouse management parameters > Number sequences).

The Advanced product numbering features is available for engineering products starting from Life Sciences 2025-Q3 release.
