When a warehouse pick is generated from a source document such as a warehouse shipment or a production order, a pick line is created for each source line. This is true even when a single pick is generated for several documents.
Source documents cannot be posted until the related pick lines have been registered. While this ensures that picking activities are fully completed before a transaction can be finished, it can sometimes lead to repetitive processes. For example, if a warehouse pick is generated for three production orders that share a common ingredient, that ingredient appears on three separate pick lines.
Avoid such scenarios by creating a staged pick. A staged pick combines several requests for the same item into a single staged picking quantity. Once an item has been staged, picks based on specific source documents can be carried out against the staged amount.
Staged picking area
In many warehouses, a physical location is set aside for staging activities. As items are picked from their storage locations, they are brought to the staging area. Smaller amounts are then picked to meet more specific needs, such as individual shipments or production orders.
Regardless of whether an actual physical staging area exists in a location, assign a staging bin for the purpose of completing staged picks. Define a location's staging bin on the Bin Policies FastTab of the location card. A staging bin serves the same purpose as other default location bins assigned for activities such as shipments, receipts, and production activities. The staging bin code appears automatically on the header of staged pick documents, as well as the warehouse picks generated from a staged pick.
Warehouse staged pick
Create a warehouse staged pick for one or more outbound transactions or production orders. Picking activity is never recorded on the warehouse staged pick itself. This page acts as a tool to manage additional warehouse picks.
When a warehouse staged pick is first created from several source documents, the program consolidates source lines for the same item into a single staged pick line. You can then generate a warehouse pick based on these staged pick lines. This pick instructs the user to take items from storage bins and place them in the defined staging bin, applying the same picking logic used to suggest bins on other warehouse picks.
As items are picked to the staging bin, the staged pick is updated accordingly. You can then use the staged pick to generate individual warehouse picks against the staged amounts. These picks are based on the staged pick's original source lines and contain instructions to take items from the staging bin and move them to either the shipping bin or the inbound production bin. Once all these picks have been registered, the program automatically deletes the warehouse staged pick.
