Production tracking

Prev Next

The manufacturing process consists of consuming different ingredients (for example, raw materials) to produce finished products. In standard Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management, the components are consumed, and the manufactured product is subsequently registered, but no unique relationship is specified. Life Sciences Supply Chain Management provides the capability to trace back the batches and/or serial numbers used for an item’s production.

To activate production tracking for an item and track it during the whole manufacturing process, users can enable the Production tracking parameter in the Released product details form > Engineer FastTab.

The setup defined at the item level is inherited by the formula/BOM lines, where users can modify the tracking requirements. For this purpose, the Production tracking parameter in the Formula lines FastTab of the Formula versions form (Product information management > Products > Released products > Engineer tab > Formula > Formula versions) can be enabled/disabled to enable or disable production tracking for a specific item at the formula level.

The setup defined at the item level is also inherited by the production formula/BOM, where the tracking requirements for each component of the formula/BOM can be modified. For this purpose, the Production tracking parameter in the Formula lines form, General tab (Production control > Production orders > All production orders > Production order tab > Formula or Production control > Production orders > All production orders > Production order tab > BOM) can be enabled/disabled to enable or disable production tracking for a specific item at the batch order/production order formula level.

Full traceability requirements include the capability to specify which batch/sub-batch of raw material is used for the manufacturing of a batch/sub-batch of the finished product. To register the correspondence of raw materials with finished products within a specific batch order/production order, users can use the Production tracking function for production orders (Production control > Production orders > All production orders > Production order tab > Inventory > Production tracking).

The Production tracking form consists of two sections:

  • On the top End item section, the list of finished products is displayed. The list is available after the material is registered and the transaction status is at least Registered.

  • On the bottom Components section, the list of components available in the formula is displayed. The list is available after the material is picked and the transaction status is at least Picked. Only items that are tracked in production (that is, items for which the Production tracking parameter is enabled) are displayed in this list.

The lines corresponding to the ingredients include a Mark checkbox. For each line corresponding to the manufactured products, the user can specify the materials used to manufacture that specific good by ticking one or more checkboxes related to the components.

Click the Apply button to store the information about the manufactured product/component relations. Existing relations can be deleted by clicking the Clear button.

When ending the production order, the system will check the following conditions:

  • Each tracked component is linked to at least one finished product.

  • Each tracked finished product is linked to at least one component.

If these conditions are not verified, an error message is displayed, and it is not possible to End the order.
