# Formula approval for production order release

Formulas and BOMs defines the list of materials needed to obtain a product, and they have direct impact on the product quality. For this reason, they need to be properly reviewed and approved.

Standard D365 allows approving and activate formulas and BOMs to allow their usage in production. Life Sciences Supply Chain Management provides an additional approval step for formulas and BOMs to allow the release of the relevant batch order/production order.

If the **Enable approval for production** parameter is enabled in the **Inventory and warehouse management parameters** (**Inventory management > Setup > Inventory and warehouse management parameters > Bill of materials** tab), the formula/BOM assigned to the relevant batch order/production order must be approved to allow the release of the order. If this additional approval step is required, an authorized user must approve the formula/BOM version (**Production information management > Products > Released products > Engineer** tab) by clicking the **Approve for production release** button. The approval for production release can be secured by electronic signature.

If the formula/BOM is not approved for production release, it will not be possible to release the batch order/production order as and the system will show an error message.

If the item is an engineering-controlled product, an authorized user can approve the formula/BOM version in the **Engineering change orders** form (**Engineering change management** > **Common** > **Engineering change management** > **Engineering change orders** > **Lines** section > **Product details** FastTab > **Formula/Bill of material** tab).

The **Approved for production release by** field records and displays the user who approved the formula/BOM for production release, providing full traceability of the approval. When an authorized user clicks **Approve for production release**, the system enables the **Approved for production release** field (which becomes non-editable), populates **Approved for production release by** with the approving user, and displays a confirmation message.

If the **Approve for production release** action is secured by electronic signature (**Organization administration > Setup > Electronic signature > Electronic signature requirements**, for the **Approve for production release** and **Approve for production release engineering change order** requirements), the electronic signature dialog is displayed first, and **Approved for production release by** is populated with the signing user once the signature is processed. This traceability behavior is the same whether or not the electronic signature requirement is enabled.

When the [Approved by > Block editing](/life-sciences/docs/block-editing-for-approval) parameter is enabled for the legal entity (**Organization administration > Organization > Legal entities**, **General** FastTab), users cannot approve on behalf of a different user, ensuring the identity recorded in **Approved for production release by** is accurate.

The **Approve for production release** action and the **Approved for production release by** field are available in the following forms:

- **Formula versions** – Product information management > Released products > Engineer tab > Formula versions.
- **Formulas** – Product information management > Bills of materials and formulas > Formulas > Header section > Formula versions FastTab.
- **Bills of materials** – Product information management > Bills of materials and formulas > Bills of materials > Header section > BOM versions FastTab.
- **Released products** – Product information management > Released products > BOM tab > BOM versions.
- **Engineering change orders** – Engineering change management > Common > Engineering change management > Engineering change orders > Lines section > Product details FastTab > Formula tab.
- **Engineering change orders** – Engineering change management > Common > Engineering change management > Engineering change orders > Lines section > Product details FastTab > Bill of material tab.
