You can assign reference numbers to business processes to enhance the traceability of business processes.

You set up reference numbering on solution level.

Standard procedure

1. Click Business process management.
2. On the Solutions tab, in the list, find and select the desired solution.
3. Click Edit.
4. Click the Parameters tab.
5. Expand the Business process reference numbers section.
6. Define the format that is used to generate the reference numbers.
Besides fixed values, you can use these variables:
- %1: Adds the reference number of the parent business process.
- %2: Adds the sequence number of the business process beneath its parent. So, a parent business process can have several child business processes. Each child business process gets the number of its position beneath the parent business process.
Example: Format %1.%2 results in reference number 1.1 for the first child business process of the first business process in the hierarchy.
In the Format field, type a value.
7. You can show assigned reference numbers in the business process hierarchies and in the business process titles on the previews.
Select Yes in the Show Reference field.

Note: If Yes, and you:
- Use an Azure DevOps integration, the business process reference numbers are included in the work item titles.
- Publish to web, the reference numbers are included in the help navigation pane and topic titles.
- Export to LCS, you can indicate that reference numbers must be included in the process names.
- Publish a document, the reference numbers are included in the headings in the document.

8. Close the page.
