You can assign reference numbers to business processes to enhance the traceability of business processes.
To define the reference number, by default the format is applied that is set up for the solution. However, you can define a business-process-specific reference number format. This format is applied to the business process itself and the business processes beneath it.

Standard procedure

1. Click Business process modeling.
2. Click Business processes.
3. Click Edit.
4. In the tree, select 'a business process'.
5. Click the Details tab.
6. Expand the Details section.
7. Define the format that is used to generate the reference numbers.
Besides fixed values, you can use these variables:
- %1: Adds the reference number of the parent business process.
- %2: Adds the sequence number of the business process beneath its parent. So, a parent business process can have several child business processes. Each child business process gets the number of its position beneath the parent business process.
Example: Format %1.%2 results in reference number 1.1 for the first child business process of the first business process in the hierarchy.
In the Reference Format field, type a value.
8. Close the page.
