Use resources in manufacturing

Prev Next

In Industrial Equipment Manufacturing (JMS), the resource task lets you track setup and runtime for the operator separately from machine time.

Prepare this in the routing operation Operation Resources. In this field, select resource groups for setup time and for runtime. With the percentage-based setting, several resource groups or resources can be assigned for all or part of the operation.

On the work or machine center, specify how to start the machine time and track it through entries in the Time Input Line Worksheet.

When the operator starts the task, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central detects if the specified work or machine center is set to start accordingly. A time input line is created for both the machine time and the operator. When the operator stops the task while a machine task is running, a prompt asks the operator whether the machine task must also stop and whether output must be posted. When the answer is No, the machine continues to run "unmanned." To stop the machine task, an operator starts and stops a task to open the "stop machine" sequence again.

The machine task bypasses time registration, so when posted, production order progress is more up to date because it does not wait for registration, approval, and posting of time sheets. The standard cost posting for capacity costs is followed, with the additional option to add the cost of the operator to the capacity costs.

For more information, see: Resources as operators.

Assigning resources or resource groups to operations

Select a resource or resource group in the following pages:

  • Standard Task Resource: the standard task is used as a template for creating operations in routings.

  • Routing Resources: this routing (when certified) is used in the production order.

  • Production Order routing lines: Planned, Firm Planned, Released Prod. Orders > Lines/Routing > Navigate/Resources.

On each of the above pages, complete the following fields:

Field

Description

Resource Group

Select a resource group to assign the resource task to. When a resource from that group starts the task, the time registration is resource-specific.

Resource No.

Select a resource to assign the resource task to.

Description

Retrieved from the Resource Group or Resource No.

Comment

Yes indicates that additional comments exist for this line.

Work Type

Select a work type for the assignment line. Costs and prices can be specified per work type in resource groups and resources.

Operation Type

Select either Setup Time or Run Time. Each type must have its own line.

Operation %

Select the amount of time for the assignment based on a percentage. For example, 100% means the selected resource group or resource completes 100% of the time shown in the production order need.

Prod. Order Need

Only for production order routing lines. The needed time is retrieved from the Prod. Order Capacity Need. The unit of measure for the work or machine center may differ from the resource.

Add to Capacity Cost

When selected, the cost of the resource is posted to the production order. Otherwise, only the time is posted with a zero cost.

Linking a work or machine center to a resource machine

On the work or machine center card, select the starting option:

  • Blank: the work or machine center does not start when an operator starts a resource task for the operation.

  • Setup: the work or machine center starts when an operator starts a resource task and selects setup time.

  • Runtime: the work or machine center starts when an operator starts a resource task and selects run time.

  • Both: the work or machine center starts when an operator starts a resource task and selects setup time or run time.

Pay attention to the units of measure for both entities. The production UOMs are identified by a type: 100/Hour, Minutes, Hours, or Days. The Unit of Measure table is extended with a type field, which is copied to the Resource Unit of Measure.

Process machine time

When a work or machine center is started from an operator resource task, the time input lines appear in the Time Output Worksheet. These time output lines follow the same status sequence as the time input line: Open > Completed > Registered. Open and Completed are set by the Start and Stop actions on the resource task. The status Registered is set when the time output line is posted.

The Post action creates a capacity ledger entry on the production order, provided that a unit cost is specified for the work or machine center.
