Tare weight refers to the weight of a container or packaging good. When an item is packaged and weighed, the resulting value is called the gross weight. The difference between the gross weight and the tare weight is the weight of the actual item, referred to as the net weight.
The Container Type page lets you capture tare weight information for each container.
Tare weight definition
You can define tare weight in two places. For container items, fields on the Container Type page let you enter tare weight information.
At the item level, you can also define tare weights for non-container items. This lets you account for the packaging materials used in items that are in turn stored in containers. Enter these tare weights for specific units of measure in the Item Units of Measure page.
Tare weight calculation
When items are assigned to a container, the program calculates a total tare weight for the container by adding the tare weight of the container item to the tare weights of the items stored in the container.
For example, a pallet container item has a tare weight of 35 pounds. A finished good item for a crate of apples has a base unit of measure of crate. Because a portion of this item's weight is the crate itself, a tare weight of 1 pound is defined. If you create a container record by loading 36 crates onto the pallet, the program calculates a tare weight of 71 pounds (36 crates at 1 pound per crate, plus the pallet weight of 35 pounds).
The program calculates the net weight of a container from the weights defined for the assigned items. Using the current example, if a unit of measure of pounds is assigned to the apple item with a value of 42 pounds per crate, the program calculates the container's net weight as 1,512 pounds (36 crates at 42 pounds per crate). If an item has a defined alternate units of measure that is a weight, the program uses this unit instead of Anywhere Mobility Solutions other weight units.
A container's gross weight is determined by adding the net weight and the tare weight. The container in this example has a gross weight of 1,583 pounds.
