# Set up commodity classes

You can create a commodity class and then assign a series of commodity cost components to that class. These cost components are used to calculate the cost of items to which the commodity class is assigned. Set up the relevant commodity cost components before performing this activity.

## Steps

1. In the search box, enter **Commodity Classes**, and then choose the related link.
2. On the **Home** tab, in the **New** group, choose **New**.
3. Fill in a line with a code and a description for the commodity class.
4. On the **Navigate** tab, in the **General** group, choose **Components**.
5. On the **Commodity Class Cost Components** page, assign cost components to the commodity class.
