# Set up the SMTP Writer endpoint

> The **SMTP Writer** endpoint is deprecated. The **Email Writer** endpoint replaces it. See: [EMAILWRITER endpoint](/business-central/docs/bc-emai-writer-endpoint).

Use the **SMTP Writer** endpoint to relay notifications to an SMTP server.

## Steps

1. Create a notification and insert the element **SMTPWRITER**.
2. On the elements line, select **Edit**.
3. On the **SMTP Writer Setup** page, fill in the following fields:

| Field | Description |
| --- | --- |
| SMTP Server | Specify the SMTP server address. |
| SMTP Server Port | Specify the SMTP port number. |
| Authentication | Specify the authentication type. |
| User ID | Specify the user credentials if you selected authentication type **Basic**. |
| Password | Specify the user credentials if you selected authentication type **Basic**. |
| Secure Connection | Select this field if the SMTP uses a secure connection. |

1. Select **OK**.
