# Project cost types

Project cost types group costs applied to projects. In Industrial Equipment Manufacturing, four main categories exist:

- **Material** (items)
- **Resources** (resources: person)
- **Equipment** (resources: machine)
- **Expenses** (G/L accounts)

Define your own codes to identify these categories on the **Project Cost Types** page. Set project cost type defaults in [Setting up Project Control Suite](/business-central/docs/bc-setting-up-project-control-suite).

The **Item card**, **Resource card**, and **G/L Account card** pages have a **Project Cost Type** field. Select a specific project cost type here to copy it to the project budget line when the item, resource, or G/L account is selected. The project cost typeset up is copied in all postings.

The project cost type is also the basis for [Surcharges](/business-central/docs/bc-surcharges) and is used in the project and project task summaries to group costs.

## Steps - Create or maintain project cost types

1. Choose the ![Lightbulb that opens the Tell Me feature](https://cdn.document360.io/da662430-6a41-47b1-8c7e-7e4ac37a9756/Images/Documentation/search_small(3).png) icon (Alt+Q) and type **Project Cost Type Codes**.
2. To create a new project cost type code, select **+New** in the ribbon.
3. To edit a project cost type code, select **Edit List** in the ribbon.
